Vein Removal

VEIN REMOVAL

Veins are blood vessels but as opposed to arteries tasked to carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body, veins are tasked to return the blood to the heart after it has already circulated throughout the body. Veins have valves that keep the blood running in one direction and towards the direction its meant to tread. However, if these valves stop functioning, blood may flow towards the wrong direction and may even pool in the vein causing it to stretch and get swollen. And there lies the problem.

There are two types of vein-related issues. Spider veins and varicose veins.

Spider Veins versus Varicose Veins

Spider veins may be seen as unflattering clusters of purple, red, and blue veins which look like webs, hence the term spider veins. What’s problematic about spider veins, though, is the fact that they often develop in highly visible areas like the face and the legs.

Varicose veins on the other hand, develop in deeper tissues. They are characterized by their swollen look (because they really are swollen), and their dark blue and purple color. What’s even more problematic about varicose veins is that they tend to bulge out. The only good thing is that this condition doesn’t show up in the face area, rather, they usually show through in the calves or thighs.

What are my Treatment Options?

For spider veins, the most common treatment is called sclerotherapy. It is a non-surgical minimally invasive procedure that promotes the closer of the involved veins by injecting a substance into the said vessels. Once this substance gets into contact with the vessel walls, controlled damage for the veins occurs, until the veins gradually close. Because of this, the veins themselves will no longer be visible until they completely disappear.

Varicose veins may also benefit from sclerotherapy. The only difference is that since varicose veins are deeper, the treatment would require ultrasound imaging to ensure precise results. There are also other options available such as microphlebectomy which would remove the problematic veins entirely, but this would depend on a case to case basis, with regards to the specific needs of the patient.
