Worried About Scars After A Reconstructive Surgery? Botox Is The Answer!

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently published a new study about the use of Botox for scars, and the results are impressive. In a nutshell, apparently another use of the wonder injection Botox have been discovered – and that is to minimize potential scarring of wounds after a surgery, more specifically, reconstructive surgery.

The Study

The study involved sixteen patients who have undergone facial plastic and reconstructive surgery within a four-month duration. Most of the patients had a birthmark removed. Each patient had each scar injected half with Botox and half with placebo.

The results were observed and recorded six months after the procedure and by different levels and factors, the results were clear. The half which received Botox treatment were significantly better than the half which received placebo. And this is for all the patients who were part of the study. These factors were the scars’ color, pliability, and just general appearance. The results showed that Botox improved the appearance of facial scars, and scars on other parts of the body.

How was the procedure done?

After the surgical procedure, Botox was injected on the wound as part of a post-surgical procedure. Botox, after all, is an injectable treatment of botulinum toxin which inhibits the movement of the muscles.

This is also the reason why Botox is an effective treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. Because it allows the area to relax and be completely still for a few months.

How did Botox work for the scars?

Talking about relaxing, that is exactly the same magic that Botox did for the surgical wounds. By inhibiting activity on the target area, the wound was allowed to heal without the additional stress brought about by movement. It also minimized scar widening and hyperpigmentation (which is responsible for a scar’s discoloration). This resulted to a significantly smaller and lighter scar. Botox for scars as a future treatment is not so far off.

Can I use Botox injections for acne and scars?

There are still a lot of studies to be done in order for Botox to be used as treatment for scars. But as what we have already mentioned, there is certainly a bright future in a possible Botox acne scars treatment.

Where else can Botox be used aside from improving the appearance of facial scars?

Botox is actually one of the most studied treatments right now. It has been one of the most effective and popular wrinkle treatment worldwide for the past fifteen years. But aside from wrinkles, patients who received treatment also started reporting other benefits, such as less migraine and less sweating. Hence, after thorough researches on these areas, Botox is also now being used to treat chronic pain caused by migraine, and excessive sweating in different parts of the body – even the scalp!
